Graham K. Strickland's novel, The Last to Die, is the product of a childhood
spent sitting on the laps of grandparents, who were the sons and daughters
of Confederate soldiers, and listening to the tales of the Civil War.
There were stories of ancestors and relatives who came home from the war and
stories of some who didn't. Born in 1940 at Fayetteville, N.C. and
reared in the eastern part of Cumberland County, the author's interest was
further stimulated by the fact that Sherman's army swept through the area
seventy five years before. Growing up in this area stimulated an
interest in the facts of the past and resulted in a degree in history from UNC-Chapel
Hill. His own military experience came as a member of a 155mm howitzer
battery in the U.S. Marine Corps reserve. |

| A real estate appraiser by
occupation, Strickland has had several free lance articles published in
several well known magazines. It was his research for his article,
"The Search for Thomas" in the November 1986 issue of The State magazine
that formed the basis for this novel. Other than a year as a teacher, history has never been his occupation but it has always been Strickland's hobby and practically all non-fishing vacations have included either stops at historical sites or searching for relics with his metal detector. In fact, almost all of the battles sites mentioned in this novel have been visited by the author in an effort to be as historically accurate as possible. He now makes his home in Asheboro, N.C. where he is a real estate appraiser for Randolph County. |
