"Great Book! I haven't had time to read it until now, but once started I could not lay it down. The chapter on Battery Wagner was very good and at times I think I could smell the smoke." ~ J.O., Dunn, NC

"You have mastered the art of keeping us history enthusiasts thirsty for details of every moment of the Civil War and entertained with a good story as well." ~ B.A., Trinity, NC

"Your book was absorbing and I gained an entirely different slant on Civil War history. As I recall, the cotton tax was never mentioned in history books. To look at the conflict from that perspective makes more sense."     A.N., Greenville, NC

"I normally do not read novels and I guess I am a stickler for hard core history.  I began reading your book yesterday and could not put it down  The pages give life to both the soldiers and the loved ones left behind.  You have done a great hob of presenting the history of the unit (51st N.C. Regiment) while giving it life through the conversation of its characters.  Your book will have a special place on my shelf."   T.B., Columbia, SC

This book is a treasure for the Civil War history buff.  Strickland has carefully described the action in each battle fought by the regiment and has illustrated some of the positions of the troops with maps.  Uniquely for a novel, he includes a bibliography, enforcing the idea that the book is as much history as novel.  We hear the soldiers speak, as they must have spoken, on topics that varied from concern for the crop harvest to their philosophical opinions as to the causes of the war."   G.F., Shohola, PA

"Your book is a spellbinder and should one day be a movie.  It is that good."  J.D., Asheboro, NC

"I really enjoyed your book and hated for it to end."  S.C., Tampa, FL

"So many times I have read novels that were so far off historically I could not enjoy them and I have read factually correct books that read too much like a battle report and bored me.  In you book there is a perfect combination of strong history and just enough fiction to make you come away feeling like you know the characters like old friends.  I have not enjoyed a book like this in a  long time."   L.S., Smithfield, NC

"The Last to Die, is one of the best books I have ever read.  You have captured everything I have ever read of wondered about the war in 329 pages.  Your explanation of the cause of the war should be mandatory reading for all students."   G.R., Sanford, NC

"Just finished your book and I must say that I really enjoyed it.  I found it especially interesting because it dealt with the "down to earth regular men"... Keep up the great work."   W.M., Fayetteville, NC

"I just want to let you know that I thoroughly enjoyed your book.  The research involved had to be tremendous for the details seemed very accurate.  Thank you for such a great story."   C.S., Asheboro, NC
